WRITING

I have been working really really hard to establish a productive writing programme this year.  I am so impressed and proud of the children's successes.  They have made a huge effort and step towards the achievements set out.  I am super proud of all of their successes since Term 1.  No matter how small and how big the success each student has made, it is a success!!!  Take a look at the photos of this term and their e-Asstle.

You are continuing to find ways to develop positive relationships with difficult students in your class. You have tried a range of strategies and are always open to new ideas and suggestions of things to try.
Curriculum/subject competence
You have made a real effort in your teaching of writing this year. You use the arts regularly in your programme which keeps things bright, vibrant and energetic. Consider your planning for these areas, even if it is retrospective to keep track of what you are covering.
Teaching techniques and class management
You are always open to trying new things. You frequently ask for help from our RTLit and PB4L leaders for ideas to support your teaching. Although there are constantly new challenges in teaching, the overall feeling of your classroom is a lot calmer and more positive than earlier in the year. You have high expectations of the students and most of them are progressing well to reach them.

Your reading, writing and maths plans are detailed and well organised. Consider how you are planning for other curriculum areas, PE, Science, Technology, Arts etc...

Personal professional qualities
You are enthusiastic and excited about the progress in your class. You have high expectations for your students which are beginning to be met. You have a positive relationship with staff and parents.
Relationships with students
Judging by the huge improvements in your students’ results this term you must have really strengthened your relationships with students. I know you have made a real effort to build a positive relationship with some of your more challenging students and we have discussed how this really improved their behaviour and therefore their learning.
Curriculum/subject competence
There has been some fabulous improvement in writing in your class so far this year. They have learnt to write with some independence and confidence.  You have shown some really great strategies in developing understanding in reading. I have enjoyed listening to you questioning students and discussing new vocab in reading lessons when I have been in your class with reading recovery students.I know we have talked about now focusing more heavily on maths to help lift students achievement in this area also. Make sure you make use of the NZMaths website and Numeracy Project books for useful ideas and Numeracy Profiles to find gaps.
Teaching techniques and class management
I have had a lot of short walk throughs in your class this term to collect reading recovery students or work with them. You have shown some big developments in your class management skills. The class works a lot more quietly with less off task behaviour than they did at the start of the year. You are able to give instructions quickly to reduce sitting time on the mat. The children are working much more independently and you are providing them with a wide range of learning experiences (beyond reading, writing, maths)
Planning and preparation
I feel that this last term has been mixed in regards to this area. While your classroom programme has run smoothly, the additional required assessments fell well behind. It is hard to keep on top of these assessments so it’s really important to be prepared with a good plan of how to keep on top of these. You are lucky to have your PRT days available to you and you need to use them wisely. I suggest that we need to make a plan as to what you will aim to achieve on each PRT day for the next term to help with this and to talk about this at each of our PRT meetings.
Your classroom plans for reading, writing and maths are clear and very detailed. You have clear needs based groups with differentiated learning intentions.
Contribution towards work of school as a whole
You have continued to support staff in their Te Reo teaching and learning this term. You help out with Netball and Miniball in your own time. There are times when you could contribute more in team and staff meetings. It is important to be focused on the discussions as there is a lot of key information in these meetings.
General
You have made some really exciting progress with your students this term for which you should be very proud of yourself. Term 3 is going to be very busy. We will make a plan as to what you would like to achieve this term in regards to your own professional learning as well as for your students. Do not be afraid to ask questions if you are unsure about anything rather than doing nothing at all. The balancing act of classwork and paperwork is a tough one but it is important to get it right as much of our data is crucial to other people in the school and the ministry.

Personal professional qualities
You have had some challenges in this first term. Starting your own class from scratch and dealing with all the challenges that come with that hasn’t been easy but your positive and enthusiastic attitude has helped you to develop some strategies that work for you and your group of students.
Relationships with students
Particularly in the second half of the term the change in student behaviour is testament to the relationships you are building with them. Some work is still needed to strengthen the relationships with some students but overall the students are happy and excited to be in your class. They are becoming more comfortable to take risks and try new things.
Curriculum/subject competence
You have particularly been working on writing in the first term and have made several changes to your programme to improve outcomes for your students. You have made an effort to observe in other classes and are open to new ideas.
Teaching techniques and class management
You have tried several different class management techniques and haven’t been afraid to ask for help when you are having trouble. You have taken some readings from the IYT programme to look at and try ideas from. You have made a behaviour plan with support and this has so far been successful.
Planning and preparation
Your planning is detailed and prepared. It is completed well ahead of time and shows that you are carefully considering next learning steps. Ensure that you are not creating more work for yourself. Complete necessary/required assessments and only do any extras when you have some spare time.
Contribution towards work of school as a whole
You are part of a pair of teachers who are supporting staff with Te Reo programmes. You have a section in weekly staff meetings to go over key vocab and phrases to fit with our topics. You have your own Te Reo resources open to all staff to use. You participate in all staff and team meetings with thoughtful and honest insights and questions.
General
Lea Anne this first term has not been easy for you. You have had some challenging behaviours to deal with as well as the stress of having and setting up a class on your own. You have shown a huge amount of progress this term in regards to the general feel in your classroom.

Personal professional qualities
You have continued to show a dedication to creating new and exciting learning experiences for the children in our class this year. You are always thinking of ways to make your lessons better which is a very important quality to have as a teacher. You have dealt with some difficult issues in a professional and appropriate way this term by taking them to the senior leadership team immediately.
Relationships with students
You have continued to build positive relationships with the students by having high expectations of them and celebrating their successes with genuine praise and rewards. You are lucky that most of your class for next year are the same children you taught this year. This will give you a bit of a head start on the relationship side of things. However, it is still important to keep thinking of ways to strengthen these as they are the foundation of everything. Think about what you will do to ensure you start the year positively.
Curriculum/subject competence
You have had great results in both your maths programme and reading groups this year. All students are making significant progress and this has been really exciting. The repetition and revision of knowledge aspects in maths has clearly paid off and the rewards system you have been using in reading has provided some extra motivation for some students. Think about how you are going to manage these rewards etc on a whole class level next year. Writing will probably be a focus for you next year as you have not done so much of that this year, so do some reading up about writing programmes over the break.
Teaching techniques and class management
You use a lot of motivating rewards to help encourage your students to use appropriate behaviour and to try hard to make progress in their learning. Consider how you can continue to do this in a whole class setting. Some of these can be very time consuming. Remember to explain/model expected behaviour, demonstrate activities and clarify questions before sending students off to complete tasks. Even when they’ve done them a hundred times before. I think an area for improvement for you is to do more more more modelling. Model behaviour, model activities, model solving problems (learning and social), model reading strategies, maths strategies, writing. Use think alouds to model to the children what it is you want them to be thinking about as they do their work. - I can explain this more in our meeting if it doesn’t make sense.
Planning and preparation
Your planning is good. You outline what you want each group to do and key things that you need to say/ask. You have a learning intention for each group and you have resources well prepared. Sometimes you may plan to do much more than you can achieve in the time available. Look at your timetable and think about how much time you realistically have with each group. If it is only 10 minutes then you’re not going to get 2 books read and a follow up activity. Do less but well, rather than more that is rushed.
Contribution towards work of school as a whole
You always contribute to meetings and discussions. You ask relevant questions to clarify anything you don’t understand. Make sure that not only the assessments but also the data/graphs etc are completed by the given date as it affects everybody else’s workload too. You have been great at stepping up to complete duties for people who are away.
General
You have finished the school year well. I think that next year will provide a lot of new learning for you as you step out into your own room. You will be able to trial new things and find your own flavour to the way you want to run your room. Keeping up to date with the paperwork is going to be tricky so my suggestion is to make a calendar right at the start of the year which gives you due dates for everything. I can help you with this too. You are going to enjoy having your own space but don’t try to do too much. The advice I got when I was a BT was to focus on 1 thing at a time and when you think you’ve got that going well, move onto the next thing. We will talk about that more when we make goals etc for next year too :)
Good job. Enjoy the break :)

Personal professional qualities
You have looked for help to support you when you feel that you are not doing something as well as you’d like. This is a great quality to have.
Relationships with students
Lea Anne you have continued to develop great relationships with the students in our class. All of the students are now looking to you as an “equal” teacher. You have continued to build relationships with all students, including the ones not in your groups. The students are excited by your enthusiasm and pride in their successes which helps them to strive to achieve.
Curriculum/subject competence
The majority of students in your groups are making significant progress. Particularly in reading, you have identified the students who are not progressing as well as their peers and are looking into ways to improve your own practise to improve their outcomes. It is great that you are already reflecting on your effectiveness as a teacher and looking for ways to improve it to make it better. I look forward to seeing a similar evaluation of your writing and maths groups. You have completed a couple of 6year Surveys and are getting faster at Running Records.
Teaching techniques and class management
You are showing a developing range of teaching and management techniques. You are choosing when to use praise and when use discipline strategies. You are learning to use modeling and explicit learning intentions to help set students up for success. Your reward system for home reading is working well for all children in the class.
Planning and preparation
You are well prepared for lessons with detailed planning. Think about where you are getting your learning intentions from. Are they something you have noticed the students aren’t doing? Or moving down a predetermined list? Do they link to the NZC, Literacy Progressions or Numeracy Project?
Contribution towards work of school as a whole
Your contribution to the school is evident in the way you took on the AROHA tile activity for our class. You have been present and involved in staff, team and SENCO (for our students) meetings. Next term it would be great if you could be involved in the AROHA 1 meetings too.
General
It is easy to forget that you are so new to teaching. You have settled into the class routine so well. You are taking small steps to develop your practise by focusing on small areas to improve. This is the best strategy as it is easy to become stressed about any mistakes made when teaching. I saw a great quote today about making sure you look after yourself, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.”

Personal professional qualities
You show a passion for teaching. You come well prepared and spend time before and after school to ensure that the children get the most out of your lessons.
Relationships with students
You have built positive relationships with the students in Room H. They are beginning to see you as the other “real” teacher not just a fill in. You have a good sense of humour which is always a great way to build relationships with kids. Ensure that all students build that relationship with you, even kids who you are not working with in groups. Use our Free Choosing developmental play activities as an opportunity for this. If you have a good idea for your groups, it’s probably a good idea for everyone.
Curriculum/subject competence
The children in your groups are all progressing well. You have come down to the junior level and have quickly learnt what they can cope with or what is too much. You have high expectations and they are working hard to meet them. Don’t be afraid to go back and teach basic skills again. Children at this age need a lot of repetition. Go back into key texts such as the numeracy project books, numeracy profiles, ELP 1-4 and literacy progressions for ideas on next steps and ways to teach them.
Teaching techniques and class management
You have done well to walk into a class that was already set up and carry on along the same track. You use the quiet corner for physical aggression and defiance. Maybe we could find a way to use the traffic light system for both sides of the classroom as warnings. Spend some time going through the Incredible Years book when you can. Praise is key - it’s not always easy.
Planning and preparation
Your plans are clear and easy to follow. You are well prepared for lessons. Some class time is still being used to get set up for or packing up lessons while the second teacher is working. Think about ways you would do this in a single teacher classroom?
Contribution towards work of school as a whole
You are an active participant in staff meetings, PLD and team meetings. You ask questions if you are not sure and share your own ideas and opinions.
General
Lea Anne you have done extremely well this term. I am very pleased with the progress the students in your groups are making. Don’t forget that we are a collaborative team not 1 lead teacher and one second teacher. Use the behaviour charts, traffic lights etc. Take charge when I am busy. Pack kids up if it’s time to move on and I’m finishing something with someone else. Join in on class discussions. Keep up the enthusiasm and dedication you have towards our class.
